exposure procedure
After thorough preparation and taking certain rules into account, the client is confronted with the specific situation. Learning to actively influence thoughts and feelings offers the client the experience that coping is possible without flight or avoidance, and he thus gains access to new coping options.

Systematic desensitization Physical relaxation and anxious excitement cannot exist at the same time. On this basis, the client learns a relaxation process and creates a step-by-step plan for his or her fear-triggering situations. The client now mentally imagines the slightest fear-triggering situation in a relaxed state. This is increased until the highest level is reached. This is followed by step-by-step practice in the realistic situation. The client learns that in a state of relaxation there is no fear reaction to the situation that would otherwise trigger anxiety, since relaxation and anxiety are physiologically incompatible. Cognitive processes The client learns through mental exercises to counteract recurring thoughts, evaluations, feelings, attitudes and self-talk. The more realistic assessment of the situations enables a more differentiated perception and offers new perspectives with the aim of assessing things more realistically. (See also Beck's cognitive therapy or Ellis' rational-emotive therapy).
